On April 20, 2026, the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) held a ceremony at South Camp to dedicate force protection and safety improvements completed at Remote Site-3 (RS-3) in Sinai.
This significant event was attended by distinguished guests, including Mr. Fumio Iwai, Ambassador of Japan to the Arab Republic of Egypt, and members of his staff; the MFO’s Director General, Ms. Elizabeth L. Dibble; the Director General’s Representative in Cairo, Mr. Brad Lynch; the Force Commander, Major General Michael Garraway, and members of the MFO team.
The improvements at RS-3 were completed thanks to generous supplemental funding provided by the Government of Japan. It represents a significant enhancement to the safety of our personnel based at the site, as well as overall force protection capabilities. RS-3 plays a crucial role in supporting MFO naval and aerial observation and related reporting at a strategic location at the northern end of the Gulf of Aqaba.
The MFO is exceedingly grateful to the Government of Japan for funding this project in addition to its regular contribution to our operating budget. This project builds on a decade of Japanese supplemental support for MFO force protection, infrastructure, and operational effectiveness in Sinai.
Furthermore, Japan’s support to the MFO is both financial and operational, combining sustained project funding with the service of four Japanese Self-Defense Force personnel in Sinai. Two of these personnel, assigned to the Force Engineering Office, assisted with this project, further ensuring the success of our mission and continued stability in the region.
The MFO remains deeply grateful for Japan’s steadfast partnership, which helps strengthen mission effectiveness and supports peace and stability between Egypt and Israel.
