›› Major General Warren James Whiting was born in Taumarunui, New Zealand. After graduating from Waikato University with a Bachelor of Social Sciences degree he enlisted in the Regular Force of the New Zealand Army in January 1978 and commenced officer training at the Officer Cadet Training Company, Waiouru.
There followed a successful career with the New Zealand Defence Forces that included the following appointments: the Royal Regiment of New Zealand Artillery, the New Zealand Army Air Corps (where he flew observation helicopters); Officer Cadet School; the Office of the Chief of Defence Force; Director of Corporate Relations Policy, Headquarters New Zealand Defence Force; Army General Staff; Commander, 3rd Land Force Group, Burnham Camp; Assistant Chief Personnel, Headquarters New Zealand Defence Force; Land Component Commander, Headquarters Joint Forces New Zealand; and Assistant Chief Strategic Commitments and Intelligence, HQ New Zealand Defence Force.
Overseas assignments included: Battery Commander, Larkhill, U.K. (1987 - 1989); Australian Army Command and Staff College (1991); New Zealand Contingent Commander, Multinational Force and Observers (1995 - 1996); New Zealand Defence Attaché, Thailand (2000 - 2002); and Defence Adviser and Head of New Zealand Defence Staff, London, U.K. (2007 - 2010).
On March 1, 2010 Major General Whiting assumed command of the Multinational Force and Observers in the Sinai Desert of the Arab Republic of Egypt.
Major General Whiting is married and has two children.
